Change is never easy. You fight to hold on. You fight to let go.
RIVER OF TEARS People wade in the chest deep floodwater in suburban Cainta, East of Manila, Philippines. Rescuers plucked bodies from muddy floodwaters and scrambled to save drenched survivors on rooftops after a tropical storm tore through the northern Philippines and left 75 people dead or missing in the region’s worst flooding in more than four decades. Bottom 10 Looks:
10. Patricia Arquette - unknown
Too much. Awful puff sleeve. Boobs bursting!
9. Elizabeth Moss - Reem Acra
Wrinkle much? I love her, but the dress is ruined because of the cheapening wrinkles.
8. Christina Applegate - Basil Soda
People loved this on her, but I think it’s dowdy. Makes her look huge, way huge, and it screams “still cancerous”, not “cancer survivor!”
7. Lauren Velez - unknown
Prom circa Horrible? It looks home-sewn, and poorly!
6. Shar Jackson - unknown
More home-sewn??? What is she even doing there? She looks like the tantrum teen who almost got Christian Siriano kicked out of Project Runway.
5. Padma Lakshmi - Badgley Mischka
I love you, Padma, but ew. I cannot believe Badgley Mischka can even create something this grotesque! What is with the color combos and the over-detailing (braiding, exploding red stuff, gathering, blah blah blah).
4. Sarah Silverman - unknown
Boxy and blue and depressing. I know she’s crazy but WTH is this?
3. Kyra Sedgwick - L’Wren Scott
Kyra is gorgeous but what is UP with this matron creation? It looks like mother-of-the-bride meets really bad bridesmaid dress. Ew to the mini-florals, ew to the uninspiring style/silhouette/everything.
2. Phoebe Price - unknown
Costume of what, and made of all sorts of icky and tacky fabrics. Totally aged and bassackwards.
1. Victoria Rowell - unknown
Come on. You can do better than that. I know nationalism but who in their right mind would wear this? If it didn’t look like a blanket, it would be equally awful, but maybe she could’ve slipped into the shadows unnoticed, and saved us all the trouble.
Well, that’s my take on this year’s lovables and untouchables. Although I can’t call myself, pompously, an expert, these (i must remind you) are just my opinions based on my forte which is really in art, design and fashion illustration. With my blogs I hope to hone my writing and critiquing of arts, fashion and culture, and though people may not read or follow what I write, I think I feel more accomplished just having my little niche in the W-W-W. 3 looks that I actually loved but were more editorial/couture than Emmy’s
1. Leighton Meester - Bottega Veneta
Leighton Meester got a lot of critique with this dress, especially because of the knots on the shoulders. I actually love this look, but I think the Emmy’s was just not the place for it. It may have been a bit too Elvira/Vampire Queen-ish for an awards ceremony. I can totally see it in a Vogue editorial with a gothic/macabre theme (mostly I say this because of her makeup), or in an evil-bratty-princess themed editorial, which is how she comes off in it.
2. Jennifer Carpenter - Zuhair Murad
Jennifer Carpenter got a lot of praise for this dress, and I totally agree. She lookes like a tall column, a goddess on a podium. But I still think this dress is more editorial because it’s a bit too severe for the Emmy’s. She looks great, she looks chic and everything, but it just screams editorial to me, like a mansion setting, or European Tivoli gardens type of thing. My two cents.
3. Mila Kunis - Monique Lhuillier
This dress got mixed reviews, but I really really like it because although it’s Monique Lhuillier, it has kind of a goth-like, Russian influence on it (ala Chanel Russian-inspired collection) that is just so editorial (the wondrous images and ideas are just flooding my mind). At the same time, it, again, seems too severe, and maybe too editorial for the red carpet. The color is a bit too gloomy, and Mila just looks kinda evil in it.
7 Looks that could’ve been great but had issues:
1. Mary-Louise Parker - Zac Posen
I love Zac Posen, but unfortunately this dress just does not totally work for me. I love the giant bow but the colors are just so drab, and the proportions seem a bit off to me. Mary-Louise Parker looks older, like a parent chaperone instead of a movie actress. If the proportions and color/fabric selection had been better, this dress might’ve been fabulous.
2. Kate Walsh - J. Mendel
This dress has good and bad angles. At times, the draping looks messy and makes Kate look a bit dumpy, but there are angles (like above) wherein the dress works. I like the bare neck and the simple jewelry, but as for the dress, maybe J Mendel needs a bit of editing with the drapery.
3. Katrina Bowden - Christian Siriano
Christian Siriano is one of my favourites to come out of Project Runway. Unfortunately, though I love this color on Katrina, the placement of the ruffles looks a bit like they’re exploding out of her pelvis. I wish he’d gone a bit more dramatic and made the ruffles longer, flowier, and perhaps played with their volume a bit more. After the awesome drama that I’ve seen from him before, this dress just looks blah in comparison.
4. Christina Hendricks - L’Wren Scott
I love a curvy girl who can fill out a gorgeous curvy dress. However, I think the shininess of the fabric might be highlighting the wrinkles more than her curves. Different fabric, perhaps? But this silhouette looks amazing on Christina, not to mention it highlights her best assets beautifully ;)
5. Vanessa Williams - Rafael Cennamo
Great pop of color for Vanessa, however, contrary to the critics’ praise of this dress, I actually find that it makes her seem a bit older and wrinklier. I think a different, maybe more dramatic silhouette might’ve made a better fashion statement for her. This simply, A-line dress is just kind of bland and lackluster for someone with as big a personality as Vanessa.
6. Chloe Sevigny - Isaac Mizrahi
I love parts of the dress, but my problem with it is that it looks too much like a shower curtain, especially in how sheer it is! The cut/form of the dress is great, and it suits Chloe fine, but who can even concentrate on that with that shower-curtain fabric? Also, her druggie makeup doesn’t help much.
7. Hayden Panettiere - J. Mendel
I don’t like the over-ruching of the dress. It seems a bit too matronly and makes Hayden look way older. The ruching also takes away from the shape of her torso, which has better-looking curves than it shows, and I think J Mendel needs to do quite a bit more editing before sending dresses like these out into the market.
Next post will feature my bottom 10 picks. photos off of google images
The Emmy’s this year was kind of a hodgepodge of extremes. While I love, love, loved a whole lot of the looks I saw, there were some that really made me question people’s taste levels, and whether or not they have a stylist backstage (or watching on TV) whom they should totally fire.
A trend that I absolutely adore is the romantic, sort of nude/subdued colors with bead or lace detailing. It’s gorgeously feminine but revamped with that undeniably couture glamor and elegance. At the same time, there were lots of looks that completely wowed me not only because of who wore them but because they displayed the kind of craftsmanship that we rarely see today. Adore, adore, adore!
Top 13 Emmy Looks (But only 10 photos :( allowed )
13. Alyson Hannigan - Vera Wang
Love the wind-tossed, out-of-bed hair on her. *tears* she’s grown up so much since her days as the oddball Willow in Buffy. The dress is cool, chic, and fits her perfectly.
12. Heidi Klum - Marchesa
No one does pregnancy like Heidi, seriously. I found it huh-larious when she said that she wears tighter clothes as she gets bigger. The baby bump silhouette in the glamorous Marchesa gown will probably spark another Hollywood trend ;)
11. Tina Fey - Gucci
Tina Fey is hot not only because she’s supersmart and superhuh-larious, but she cleans up nice too. This classy Gucci gown is just right in flaunting her edgy quirk and shows us that funny girls can be haute too ;)
10. Blake Lively - Versace
I adore this Versace on the runway model, but Blake Lively looks awesome in it too—some would disagree, but I actually like that her hair (unlike most of the time when she’s sporting her wind-tousled Serena hair) is classier and that the cut of the gown highlights a sort of hot recklessless (embodying Serena?) about her while still keeping it classy.
9. Debra Messing - Michael Kors
I love how Deb Messing isn’t afraid of red-on-red clashing, because this Michael Kors gown is just gorgeous, as usual, on her. I don’t know how she does it, but she really seems to get better and more stylish every time I see her.
8. Kristin Chenoweth - Zuhair Murad
Kristin took a chance wearing a broken-mirror dress, but I think picking a short dress that works great for her petite frame was a good decision. This dress is totally her—it exudes her bubbly and sparkly personality without being tacky (and with this much glitter, it’s easy to be tacky!). And who doesn’t love her reaction when she won? Ah-dorable!
7. Sandra Oh - Marchesa
The dress is standard glamorous and fabulous, but the main reason why I put Sandra Oh this high up is because this is probably the first time I’ve seen her really look like a star. I mean look at that red carpet shot. Now is that a glamor girl or what? She’s probably one of the few Asian women I’ve seen who looks fabulous in gold without looking too oriental!
6. Drew Barrymore - Monique Lhuillier
I completely adore and cannot stop staring at this dress, especially at the beautiful detailing on that full skirt! It looks like it must have taken an army of little fairy elves years to hand-stitch, and Drew is the elven queen. Sad that she didn’t win for Grey Gardens, but all the same, this nude-colored, romantic, old-hollywood-esque glamor shows us she doesn’t need the Emmy to be called a star.
5. Ginnifer Goodwin - Yves Saint Laurent
This is probably the only purple dress that worked this whole night. There were so many shades and variations of purple, each more grotesque than the next, but Ginnifer Goodwin’s YSL gown made it work. At closeup, I have some issues with the puckering on the sweetheart neckline, but other than that, I love how chic this is, especially coupled with her Peter Pan hair and alabaster skin.
4. Perry Reeves - Naeem Khan
Totally in love with this dress. Look at that beadwork! It’s a great combination of modern with romance, and Perry Reeves is just a column of heaven in it. Again, I am totally loving this nude-tone thing that’s everywhere. It looks so romantic, so elegant, and yet distinctively with edge and sophistication that just reeks of old Hollywood glamor.
3. January Jones - Versace
I have to give props to Versace and to January Jones for this dress. Kojo called it an alien dress, but I never really agreed with him, especially looking at his picks for best and worst this year. This dress is brave and awesome, making use of classic elements, contrast in structure, as well as a hint of modern geometric shapes and bits of origami to make it fresh, but without sacrificing the cutting edge of Versace, or taking it too far into the avant-garde that it doesn’t become wearable.
2. Rose Byrne - Valentino
This dress is perfect for Rose Byrne. She looks like a beautiful, sculpted angelic doll in it—which is kind of a great match-up when you think of her role in Damages. She looks hauntingly beautiful, with an air of the olden, romantic, semi-gothic fairy tale. I love that her hair is simple and blunt-cut, it actually adds to the dress’ mystique. The beadwork is amazingly placed, and overall it’s just a dreamy, fantastic dress with subtle edge that matches her personality and her character perfectly ;)
1. Olivia Wilde - Marchesa
I think everyone was wowed by Olivia Wilde’s daring and sophistication. Marchesa does it again, and this delicate and dreamy dress is just perfect on Olivia. It has just enough avant-garde, coupled with brilliant craftsmanship, and I think it just complements Olivia’s “Wilde” (pun intended) and raw sensuality, beauty and sophistication.
Next post will feature looks that I love but just didn’t seem right for the Emmy’s
If there’s one thing a true fashion snob hates, it’s the tacky fashion fakers. I’m talking about those people who pretend to be experts when everything they’re wearing are knockoffs straight from the web clips of Gossip Girl and the exotics splattered across the pages of US Weekly. It’s totally archaic that these people call themselves originals and having “personal style”, when the clinical truth is that nothing that anyone wears is truly original, because all the tags indicate that someone else’s brain was responsible. It’s totally obvious when people wear fashion like a costume, because they’re trying too hard to wear what they think everyone else says is acceptable, when instead they should be wearing the clothes that highlight and complement their individual personality, not putting on the personality of the over-glorified ‘other’. I would name names, but that’s trashier talk than Anna Nicole’s intimates. I guess I’ll just have to show you.
some editorial spreads i’m in love with. wish there were more of these locally.
